External review comittee 2010 report

The activity in mathematics has continued to be very active and attractive to young researchers. The most noticeable features are:

  • The diversity of topics treated in workshops and schools, including imaging and visualization which are at the center of CoLab scientific themes.
  • Academic excellence in the choice of speakers, as evidenced by the Field Medal recipient, C. Villani, who has long been involved in the mathematics department of UT Austin.
  • The active management of the program has led to an important list of common activities between Portugal and Austin that includes schools, workshops, conferences, long term research visits and common publications. The PhD and postdoctoral programs are now launched with some international success.

The research projects reflect the diversity of the workshops ranging from medical sciences, fluid flows, material science, finance, cryptography, and machine learning, to more methodological questions which are certainly very important to preserve in such a longterm collaboration.

Clearly, the program is a good trajectory, and is internationally visible.
